Hellmut G. Augustin, DVM, PhD (project leader), is an experimental pathologist with 20 years of experience in vascular biology research. He is the head of the Joint Research Division Vascular Biology within the DKFZ-ZMBH-Alliance and Heidelberg University (Mannheim Campus). Hellmut G. Augustin is leading a multidisciplinary research group exploring vascular biology from different perspectives, including angiogenesis and vascular differentiation, tumor progression and metastasis as well as vascular signalling and developmental vascular biology. He has done pioneering work in the establishment of novel endothelial cell differentiation and angiogenesis assays which will significantly contribute to SyStemAge.
Role in SyStemAge:
Hellmut G. Augustin is responsible for the endothelial ageing experiments that are being pursued within SyStemAge. These focus on endothelial ageing experiments in relevant animal models as well as the transcriptomics and epigenetic profiling of endothelial cells during ageing (WP2). Hellmut G. Augustin contributes established endothelial cell differentiation and angiogenesis assays and provides endothelial function-related constitutive and conditional mouse models. As project leader, he also dedicates some time to the project by directing and supervising post-docs and graduate students, designing experiments, writing publications and presenting the results at conferences as well as coordinating the work flow within the lab, and outside with various collaborators.
